Survey domestic and outbound tourism
Survey on domestic and outbound tourism is survey focused on personal and business travel. It has been conducted since 2003.
What is the objective of the survey?
The objective of the survey is to provide regular detailed information on the overall travel activities of the Slovak population. Data are obtained from questionnaires completed by respondents; it contributes to a better understanding of participation and non-participation in the tourism, reasons, number of trips, average expenditures, length of stay, final destinations.
The results of the survey are a key basis in decision-making processes, for analysing the economic and social situation in households and when setting up effective tools, as well as when adopting specific economic or social measures in this field.
When and where will the survey be conducted?
The survey is conducted quarterly; the final statistical results are published annually. Based on a stratified random selection, 8,200 households in more than 730 municipalities are included in the survey for 2024.
Who will answers the questions?
The respondents of the survey are all persons over the age of 15 who completed at least one trip with at least one overnight stay for any purpose in the SR and abroad over the last 3 months.
What will we ask?
All trips to places away from the habitual residence made for personal and business purposes are recorded, e.g. holiday, recreation, tourism, visits to relatives and friends, participation in cultural and sports events, pilgrimages, business trips, participation in trainings, conferences, shopping or irregular stays at a cottage or other holiday home, etc. It is also collected more detailed information about the people, who travelled, what types of accommodation and transport they used.
How are the household data provided to the office protected?
All data from the questionnaires are exclusively used for state statistics, are confidential and protected according to the Slovak and European legislation. Final statistical information is always published aggregated, and it is not possible to identify data on specific households and persons from it.
Can the respondent refuse to complete a questionnaire?
National legislation imposes an obligation on the selected respondent to provide the required information, pursuant to Act No. 540/2001 Coll. on state statistics as amended.
The survey is also part of the European Statistical Programme and is carried out in accordance with Regulation of the European Parliament and the Council (EU) No. 692/2011, which means that European legislation also obliges us to do so. It precisely determines and defines the specifics of how to conduct a survey, to what extent, periodicity, to what territorial level, and in accordance with a harmonized internationally comparable methodology.
We thank all respondents who participate in surveys, because they help to know the problems of society and to obtain quality and reliable information, thereby contributing to solutions and positive changes.
How will the questionnaire be completed? How will the survey be conducted?
- The Statistical Office of the SR will address the selected household in writing - a letter in which informs about including a household in the survey, indicating a name of the interviewer (the person responsible for the Statistical Office of the SR, e-mail and telephone contact of this person). At the same time, the exact date and time of the interviewer's visit to this household will also be indicated.
- The selected household can verify whether it is really a survey of the Statistical Office of the SR and whether the household has been also included in the survey by the managers of the eight regional offices of the office on the contracts also listed in the cover letter or in the following table: Contact persons for the field surveys in regions of the SR format (XLSX 25 kB) or format (ODS 17 kB).
- The respondent can then adjust/change the date of the interviewer's visit to his household, choose another meeting place outside his household, or will arrange the interview by telephone, if possible.
- The interviewer of the Statistical Office of the SR will prove his identity with a special authorization/passport at the personal meeting.
- A personal meeting with the interviewer is an advantage, it will speed up the completing of the questionnaire, enable it to be filled out more accurately and comprehensively (interviewers are trained in survey methodologies).
- The municipality/city will be informed about the conducting of the survey, which is helpful in solving the respondents' questions.
When and where will the results be available after processing?
After processing, the results will be published in various structures (e.g. by gender, age, length of stay, reasons for participation and non-participation, territorial breakdown) in the products of the Statistical Office of the SR, namely:
- in the public DATAcube. database in chapter 4.5. - Tourism
- in the annual information reports, which will be available in the Information Reports Catalogue
